On October 19, 1953, in Halifax County, North Carolina, the late Johnny Lee Simmons and the late Geneva Avent Simmons were blessed with a little boy whom they named Lonnie Simmons. From the very beginning, Lonnie brought light and joy to those around him, and that never changed throughout his 72 years of life. Lonnie grew up between North Carolina and New Jersey before eventually making his home in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In the early 1970s, he met the love of his life, Renee Garretson, and the two began a courtship that would blossom into a beautiful family. Together they welcomed four children, and in 1982 they made it official when they married. Lonnie always kept a smile on his face and loved his family deeply. Known affectionately as "Lightning Lonnie" in the streets and "Lonnie Love" to the ladies, he had a personality that filled every room he walked into. Lonnie was a man who loved the sweet science of boxing and had a true passion for cars. Whether he was talking fights or admiring a fine automobile, his enthusiasm was contagious and his company was always a good time. After struggling with multiple illnesses over the past few years, Lonnie was called home from his worldly tribulations on Saturday, August 1, 2026. He was 72 years old. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Renee Garretson Simmons; his parents, Johnny Lee and Geneva Simmons; his brothers, Johnnie Lee, David, Will, and Willie Simmons; and his sisters, Cora Lee, Eva Mae, and Sarah Simmons. Lonnie leaves to cherish his loving memories his four devoted children: 2 sons, Dimitrius Garretson and Clinton Garretson, and 2 daughters, Laura Garretson and Celeste Garretson. He also leaves behind a long term partner Barbara Reed, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and dear friends who will miss him dearly. A viewing will be held at Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by cremation. A repass will follow for family and friends to gather and celebrate Lonnie's life together. Rest easy, Lightning Lonnie. You are loved and will never be forgotten.
